Mark Winzer studied film at Grand Valley State University and earned a Master of Arts degree from Seton Hall University. Mark enjoys writing screenplays that both entertain and challenge the viewer through bold choices with subject matter and style. As a Gulf War veteran he is especially capable of adroitly writing authenticity into the action genre.
DRESSED IN A BLACK FLAG is based on the true life rise, capture and trial of Anne Bonny and Mary Read, two women who rejected the shackles of 1720 society to become pirates on the high seas. This award winning script recently won the Wildsound International Film Festival in Toronto where it was performed on stage with a full cast at the Canadian National Film Board. DRESSED IN A BLACK FLAG also took first place honors at the Reel Heart International Film Festival where it was performed once again by a full cast in Toronto. An innovative and fresh voice, Mark has a particularly good ear for dialogue that resonates with the audience. The Female Eye Film Festival selected DRESSED IN A BLACK FLAG for their elite “good to go” program and a live reading captivated the audience. Nearly three hundred years after their famous trial, there continues to be an insatiable interest in the lives of Anne Bonny and Mary Read.
Mark’s first feature screenplay, THE INTERVIEW, was named a winner at the Cinema City International Film Festival competition this February in Los Angeles and took first place honors at the VISIONFEST07 Film Festival in New York City. THE INTERVIEW was also nominated for the “Golden Slate” Award at the California Independent Film Festival and placed or received “Official Selection” honors from numerous other prestigious film festivals.
Mark just completed his third feature screenplay entitled RIPPLES. This socially relevant drama is a provocative story of faith and redemption ripped from today’s headlines. He is currently seeking representation for this project. Mark also just applied his craft to a short script entitled KEEMO THE ARCHER, which is a story of a young girl who battles her cancer in a post-operative dream. Mark is seeking a producer/director that is committed to excellence in film making to share his passion in developing an inspirational short film dedicated to the patients and families battling cancer.
